About the author and illustrator
Written by Bill Martin Jr. and illustrated by Eric Carle. Martin was a teacher who understood that small children learn language through rhythm and repetition, and built the text to be chanted rather than read. Carle painted tissue paper and cut it into the animals — the same collage method he would later use for The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
